Durham VAMC Residency Programs
Geriatrics & Orthopedics
Geriatrics:
The Durham Veteran’s Administration Medical Center (Durham VAMC) Post-Professional Physical Therapy Geriatric Residency Program is now accepting applications for the 2023-2024 residency year. Our Physical Therapy Geriatric Residency was accredited by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE) in 2014 and since then has boasted a 100% pass rate on the GCS exam by graduates within 1 year of completion of the residency. Our program’s goal is to develop Geriatric Clinical Specialists and future leaders in providing exceptional health care to older adults throughout the continuum of care. We hope that you will share this opportunity with your current DPT students and graduates. We feature various didactic course series which our residents complete alongside other geriatric trainees within the medicine, pharmacy, and occupational therapy professions and promote an interdisciplinary approach to caring for older adults. Mentors hold specialty certifications in geriatric, orthopedic, neurologic, and cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy. Teaching assistantship opportunities are available with Duke University DPT Program.
Please visit our website for additional information about our program – Post-Professional Physical Therapy Geriatrics Residency | VA Durham Health Care | Veterans Affairs. All applications must be completed on the RF-PTCAS website (https://rfptcas.liaisoncas.com) by March 1, 2023. The residency will run from July 2023 to July 2024. Questions may be directed to my attention at tasala.rufai@va.gov.
Orthopedics:
We are actively seeking applicants for the Durham VA Medical Health Care system Orthopaedic Residency 2023-2024 academic year. This is a well-rounded and robust year-long paid-experience that occurs primarily at the main campus in Durham, North Carolina with adjunct experiences at Duke University Medical Center, and a planned 6-week experience at Womack Army Medical Center at Fort Bragg, NC. We are very proud to have the opportunity to collaborate with these facilities to ensure a comprehensive clinical experience involving both Veteran and Active military populations. The program counts as years in Federal services. Stipend, Health Care, Vision and Dental Benefit options, Annual Leave and Sick Leave Accrual, as well as 10 Federal Holidays are included.
Each year is designed to be an individualized resident experience: using adjunct components to emphasize participant interests in addition to ensuring core competencies. The program hosts multiple mentors that specialize in differing area of orthopedic-related PT, including Urgent/Emergent clinic, ER, chronic pain specialization, dry needling intervention, acute care, geriatric subset, hand, and orthopedic pediatrics. In addition to a literature-based core-curriculum, adjunct didactic experiences include one on one skills/mentor sessions weekly, observation within orthopedics, pain management clinic, surgery, with opportunities to observe amputee clinic, adaptive equipment clinic, and assist with any available ongoing active military research projects while at Womack Army Medical Center. Teaching Assistantship and academic components are made available through affiliations with Duke University DPT, Campbell University DPT, and most recently, High Point University DPT program.
We are accepting applications through February 1st, 2023 with an anticipated start date of July 3rd (Monday) 2023.
